Biosafety cabinets are used to provide primary containment in the laboratory and these are usually of three types. A biosafety cabinet is also known as microbiological safety cabinet. This equipment is an enclosed, ventilated laboratory workspace where the scientists or the user can safely work with contamination that requires a defined biosafety level. The basic purposes of this equipment’s are to protect the laboratory worker and the surrounding environment from contamination. BSC class II B II is fabricated of industrial grade wooden boards that are covered with mica sheets. The inner portion of these biosafety cabinets are painted with epoxy paint coating for extra-long life. The working table is made of heavy gauge stainless steel sheet of grade SS-304. The side panels are made of heavy plexi glass sheets that are mounted on anodized aluminium frames. The entire unit is supplied with differential manometer to gauge the pressure drop in the unit while operation, beside the gas cock and power socket. There are four types of class II cabinets. These are class II type A, class II type B1, class II type B2, and class II, type B3. BSC class II B II are vented cabinets, comprising 30% of the air exhausted from the cabinet while 70% is recirculated back into the room. This cabinet may be used with etiologic agents treated with minute quantities of toxic chemicals and trace amounts of radionuclides required as an adjunct to microbiological studies if work is done in the directly exhausted portion of the cabinet or if the chemicals or radionuclides will not interfere with the work when recirculated in the down flow air. There are different classes of Biosafety Bench class. These are mainly divided into three classes. Class I, class II, and class III. There is not much difference between the constructions of these biosafety cabinets but the functioning varies. The class I biosafety bench class is an open front negative pressure cabinet. The exhaust air from the cabinet is filtered by a high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter. This class will provide personnel and environmental protection, but it will not provide product protection. Whereas class II is also an open front, ventilated cabinet that provides a HEPA filtered, recirculated mass airflow within the work space. The exhaust air is filtered by HEPA filters and this biosafety bench class II provides personnel, environmental and product protection. Though HEPA filters are effective for trapping particulates and infectious gases, but these filters will not capture volatile chemicals or gases.
