It eliminates the unproductive conveyors, helps in reducing the line length and even incorporates workstations which were previously separate in the main line and thereby results in reducing the inventory’s cost of supply. Its main features are as follows: • It has a greater variety of products. • It has a greater flexibility and faster response. • It provides for a stable production schedules. • It offers a smooth supply chain management. • It caters to demand management. • It has an excellent quality and reduces the cost significantly. • It has the requisite calibre to meet the global market and competition. The main benefits of this product provided by Lean manufacturers are enumerated as follows: • The main strategic benefit is that it significantly increases the quality of the work processes. This results in better productivity along with a superior quality of the products. • Secondly, it decreases the cost of production as it makes use of lesser resources. • It undoubtedly reduces the time of the production cycle. It just plucks out the useless steps from the main process of manufacturing thereby reducing the time of production and enabling more voluminous production in the same period of time. • It reduces the usage of inventory and the storage space. To conclude, let us have a look at the following five lean thinking principles. Firstly, to define a value as defined by the ultimate customer. The second principle is to identify the value stream which includes the idea transformation, information transformation and the physical transformation in terms of the raw materials to the ultimate customer. The third principle is to make the work flow i.e. not to stop the work as it incurs additional costs. Fourth is to respond only when the customer pulls out work. Last principle is to strive to seek perfection and maintain a zero waste policy irrespective of what the competitors are achieving. Therefore, lean manufacturing system is an efficient system to reduce costs and achieve greater output.
