Flames erupted on a runway of the Lynchburg Regional AirportSaturday morning, emanating heat onto the nearby bodies caked inblood and scattered across the grass. Within a minute, an airport fire truck doused the blaze.Firefighters soon arrived and entered the crippled 50-passengerplane as smoke spilled from the roof due to an interior fire. Screams could be heard from the inside as emergency crews pulledinjured and dead from the wreckage, carrying bodies on stretchersand into ambulances. One woman"s hand was missing, suitcasesand clothes were sprawled everywhere, a helicopter left withinjured passengers – all scenes of a horrific disaster. The "disaster" was a drill, the "plane" was a simulator and the"victims" were local volunteers in character.
The purpose was not make-believe, but rather to prepare for theworst-possible disaster with mass casualties that could strike theairport at any time. "Nothing replaces going through an actual simulated incident," saidMark Courtney, airport director. "It"s a very thorough andwell thought out plan. It really does all come together." The drill, required of all federally certified air carrier airportsin the United States every three years, tests the regional airportand nearby localities" mutual abilities to respond to anactual aircraft disaster with casualties. A replica of a regional-size aircraft that utilizes propane gas toprovide a real fire-fighting environment was used forSaturday"s exercise.
J. Bowen, the airport"s fire chief, said before the drillthat an area just in front of the simulator called the "pit" wouldbe temporarily lit on fire and there would be a small blaze on theinside of the plane. No volunteers were in danger during the drill, which he said is a way to put into practice what emergency workersstudy in classrooms. "This keeps up our training," Bowen said.
The airport"s fire unit, Campbell County"s fire andemergency services units, the city of Lynchburg"s publicsafety department and rescue squads from surrounding areasparticipated in the event, which was staged to resemble what acrash of a regional airliner like those at the airport would looklike. Courtney also took part in the drill, going through the protocolshe would follow as if "the real thing" was happening; his dutieswould include handling media inquiries at a set-up command centerand helping assist passengers" families. He said he was pleased with the cloudy skies and lack of humidityand heat that often take its toil on participants during suchexercises. The volunteers were mostly teenagers from the Lynchburg Overlorddivision of the U.S.
Naval Sea Cadet Corps. Nicholas Deal, 13, played the role of a burn victim. He said ofemergency responders: "It"s nice enough to know that theytake their time to do this kind of stuff." Despite rain, he said it was a fun experience. "I"ll tell you what, I like it," said Deal, ofAmherstCounty."I like it a lot. You"ve got to learn to keep patient andcalm if this kind of disaster does happen.".
