The Congress-led UDF government in Kerala and the Uttarakhandgovernment led by Vijay Bahuguna have decided to waive tax onpetrol while the NDA, opposing the steep hike in petrol prices, hascalled for a nation-wide bandh on May 31. "UDF government does not justify the Centre's decisionto increase prices. But we are committed to bringing some relief topeople and are bringing down sales tax on petrol. With thisdecision, petrol price will come down by Rs 1.63 per litre,"Chief Minister Oommen Chandy told reporters after a special cabinetmeeting in Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday. The Uttarakhand government decided to waive VAT on the increasedamount, providing a relief of Rs 1.87 per litre to the people ofthe state. We(NDA) are going to observe a Bharat bandh on May 31." He asked why the hike in petrol prices was not announced whenParliament was in session, and why oil companies did so the verynext day after the session ended. "The government has washed their hands clean on price hike,but in reality, it happens only when the government wants it tohappen. The Government will also increase prices of diesel and LPGafter the Presidential elections get over," Mr. Yadav said. The JD(U) chief accused the government of being a "totalfailure" in checking prices of essential commodities. "Common people are suffering due to the wrong policies of theUPA Government. Prices of commodities are rising uncontrollably,making it difficult for an average Indian to make ends meet,"he said. This government is pro—rich and not bothered about the poor,he charged. Roll back hike: CPI(M) CPI(M) activists today staged a protest near Parliament Housedemanding rollback of the steep hike in petrol prices. Carrying party flags and placards, the activists staged a marchfrom Vithalbhai Patel House, close to Parliament House, to hold thedemonstration. The protesters were led by CPI(M) Central Committee member NilotpalBasu. CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat said that steep hike in thepetrol price was expected. "That is why we said yesterday that Government should notincrease the prices otherwise we would conduct all India protests.We will continue the protests till we get the government to rollback the prices," Mr. Karat told reporters here. He said that the Left has called for a hartal in different States."We are having different protest actions," Mr. Karatsaid. Pandian led a protest at Saidapet here whilethe CPI (M)-affiliated youth organisation DYFI staged a protestoutside Indian Oil Bhavan here. Around 25 DYFI activists were detained as they did not havepermission to stage protest, police said. Meanwhile, the CPI announced state-wide agitation on May 26condemning the hike in petrol prices and demanding its immediaterollback, Mr. Pandian said. TDP, Left and BJP stage protests Opposition parties in Andhra Pradesh including Telugu Desam,CPI(M), CPI and BJP staged protests in Vijayawada city and Krishnadistrict against the petrol price hike. The TDP, BJP and CPI(M) leaders in the city staged ‘rastaroko' at different places and demanded a roll back in thehike. They questioned why the Union government was not willing tocut excise and customs duties on crude oil instead of raising theprice. Even the State government was not willing to cut its sales tax onpetroleum price to relieve the common man from the hike, they said. The leaders expressed fear that the government may also hike dieseland LPG prices within a few days. The petrol price hike will definitely have an impact on theby-polls in the State and the people will teach a lesson toCongress in the by-polls, to be held for 18 Assembly and one LokSabha seat on June 12, the protesting leaders said.
