A properly manufactured bearing, is round in shape and any defected bearing, will have an oval or egg-shaped appearance. A defective bearing, shifts the position of the gear pump in the chamber, rather than making it remain straight like it is supposed to be. Within a gear pump, bearings and gears are the components which are most likely to get damaged. But it is important to check the other parts of the pump as well, for any signs of damage. For example, it is very important that the pin which holds the gears into the shafts, remains in good condition as it affects the performance of the pump. The pump will stop functioning, if the pin develops any cracks or gets sheared.
