Andrew Beeghly has been in many situations in his career that call for prompt action and quick thinking. Now serving as a Battalion Surgeon for the 5th Special Forces Group of the US Army, he has thrived in these situations, and has turned this coolness under pressure into a lifestyle choice, immersing himself in wilderness medicine and wilderness survival. Andrew Beeghly says that the true measure of a man is what he can do when it all goes wrong. By that measure, Andrew Beeghly is among the highest around. Here Andrew Beeghly shares a few simple basics pertaining to wilderness safety and preparedness. - Shelter. Shelter is often overlooked, but always of vital importance, says Andrew Beeghly. Too many people head into the wilderness with insufficient shelter, or without the knowledge to build their own shelter from materials at hand. Shelter can mean the difference between surviving a cold night in the wilderness and not. Knowing how to build a shelter is an invaluable tool.
- Water. These days there is little excuse for not carrying clean bottled water with you on any wilderness trip, says Andrew Beeghly. If you find yourself stuck with no drinkable water, there are several techniques for filtering and purifying rainwater or possibly contaminated water, Andrew Beeghly says. Learn one or more of these techniques, even if you are only planning on camping for a night. Which leads into the next point:
- Be prepared for the worst. It is not morbid to prepare for a disaster, says Andrew Beeghly; things go wrong, it’s a simple fact of life. If you pack for the possibility of something going wrong, you can only help yourself when something does go wrong. Even a simple fishing trip can result in a situation where you need survival techniques, says Andrew Beeghly. Know these techniques, and be ready to use them; they could save your life and the lives of those around you.
- In an emergency situation, the primary order of business is to keep calm and establish control. People have a natural tendency to panic when things go wrong, says Andrew Beeghly, and if you do not establish calm authority the situation could worsen quickly, leading to further problems and a snowball effect. Keep calm, reassure everyone that things will be OK, and that the situation is under control.
Following these tips will have you well on your way to being better prepared for your next wilderness adventure, says Andrew Beeghly. http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/healthandsafety/training/wilderness_fa.aspx http://survivalcache.com/wilderness-survival/
