Posted: May 15th, 2012 Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology andBiosceptre collaborate on cancer antibody research ( Nanowerk News ) UniQuest, The University of Queensland's (UQ) maincommercialisation company, has facilitated a strategic researchcollaboration and antibody production agreement between AustralianInstitute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (AIBN) researchersand Biosceptre International Limited to develop a bioprocess forproducing certain monoclonal antibodies for the treatment ofcancer. Under the UniQuest agreement, the AIBN's National BiologicsFacility (NBF) will characterise candidate therapeutic monoclonalantibodies that bind Biosceptre's novel proprietary cancer target, known as nf-P2X7. The research and development will includeantibody development, cell line development, bioprocess developmentand recombinant protein production in pre-commercial quantitiesahead of preclinical trials. UniQuest Managing Director, David Henderson, said the partnershipwith Biosceptre reflected the commitment by UQ and the AIBN to workclosely with private industry to discover new potential cancertherapies. "Cancer is the second leading cause of death worldwide and thedisease with the highest unmet medical need.
Biosceptre'srecognition of the AIBN's capabilities demonstrates the valueindustry places on working with Australian university researchersto optimise the outcomes from both publicly and privately fundedresearch for the benefit of the wider community," Mr Hendersonsaid. The collaboration was made possible with support from Medigen, aprivately held investment company which is linked to the Creatagroup of companies and utilises the services of Creata Ventures. No commercial terms of the agreement have been disclosed. Biosceptre's CEO, Dr Cliff Holloway, said the researchcollaboration was a critical step towards preclinical and humanclinical trials involving its monoclonal antibody targeting thenon-functional form of P2x7, a major cellular receptor responsiblefor apoptosis (the process of normal cell death). "Our long-term goal is to develop a therapeutic monoclonal antibodycapable of specifically detecting non-functional P2X7 and inducingcancer cell death without affecting normal healthy cells," DrHolloway said.
"Having evaluated a number of national and international providersof such antibody services, we have been impressed with the advancedequipment and quality of the infrastructure at the AIBN NationalBiologics Facility. The technical expertise of Dr David Chin, NBFOperations Manager, and his team in our pre-deal evaluation hasalready delivered value for Biosceptre." Biosceptre recently appointed eminent monoclonal antibody pioneerSir Greg Winter as Chairman of its Scientific Advisory Board. TheBritish biochemist, who developed the world's first fully humantherapeutic antibody, included a tour of AIBN's National BiologicsFacility and a discussion on the AIBN iosceptre collaborationduring his visit to Australia earlier this year. It is home to 19 research groups working at theinterface of the biological, chemical and physical science toalleviate current problems in human health and environmentalissues. AIBN research focuses on developing new products, processesand devices for improving human health and quality of life. In thisway the institute goes beyond basic research to promote and developthe growth of innovative industries, which will benefit theQueensland and Australian economies. The AIBN proudly acknowledgesthe financial support of Atlantic Philanthropies, the QueenslandState Government and the University of Queensland toward theconstruction of the AUD$75 million AIBN research facility.
