ROANOKE, VA -- Center in the Square has been under construction in DowntownRoanoke since last Summer. "The center was becoming stale, mundane to the visitor," said JimSears, the president of Center in the Square. "Some of ourexhibits being 25-plus years old were broken, and hard to keepactive and in good order." To keep visitors coming back, designs were approved for a new andimproved Center. It's easy to see the progress made so far.
Big piles of rubble canbe seen inside, and you can hear the sounds of construction for the$30 million renovation. "When you're renovating an old building like this, was built in1914, there's alot of destruction that has to take place before yourebuild," noted Sears during our private, hard-hat tour. But that reconstruction is starting to take shape. The new WeinerStand walls and floor have been tiled, and new appliances are inplace. The Downtown Roanoke staple will be the first part of Center in theSquare to re-open, perhaps in a couple of weeks if everythingcontinues well.
Outside the restaurant, and still on the first floor, you see adifferent picture. Piles of rubble, wet concrete, and heavyequipment sit inside what will one day be the atrium. It will bebig enough to hold 750 people, and glass tanks full of fish, seahorses, and much more. "I've been told by people who have come through here, that the onlything that will be recognizable in the future is the staircase,"said Sears.
The second floor will be home to the Harrison Museum of AfricanAmerican Culture, and part of The History Museum of WesternVirginia. The history museum will continue on the third floor. The Science Museum of Western Virginia will be located on thefourth and fifth floors. Construction workers are currently working on the fifth floor, where you will be able to walk among butterflies.
Welders arepiecing together the butterfly dome wings, capping the building. The sixth and seventh floors will feature an outdoor space, coypond, shopping, and a green roof. There is still a lot of work to be done, but Sears says most of itshould be finished by the end of October. The grand opening isscheduled for May 2013.
