Westvleteren Beer. The Trappist Abbey of Saint Sixtus of Westvleteren in Belgium has most likely the best beer in the World according ratedbeer.com and numerous other connoiseurs. In 2012, for the first time in history the monks exported a small quantity Westvleteren 12 beerboxes to the USA. The beer was sold out in no time, only 15.000 boxes were available for US customers. It might take a while before you find these beer boxes again in store as it will take at least 100 years before they need more renovations in the abbay. That’s why these beer boxes are such interested collector items al over the World. Boxes contains six bottles of Westvleteren 12 and two beautyfull handcrafted glasses. Even for Belgian residents it is hard to get a crate of this fine beer. They have to make a reservation on the beer phone which is not easy to get an answer and then it’s possible to pickup maximum 2 crates of beer every 60 days, car license plate and telephone numbers are registrated to exclude cheaters. They have two blond Beers of 6° and 8° and one dark coloured with 10° alcohol. Foundation Sint Sixtus. In 1814 Jan Baptist victor left the city of Poperinge en went living on his own in the woods of Sint Sixtus. In 1831 the prior from Catsberg Monastery along with a couple monks passed by these woods and decided to stay there besides Jan Baptist and that’s how a new Cisterciën monastery was born. In the early beginning were alot of difficulties yet they kept growing. During WWI 100’s of refugees and allied soldiers settled aroud the area of the abbay. Het abbot Dom Gerardus made a decision in 1945 to restrict the volume of Westvleteren beer production and to keep the maximum at 4800 hectoliter each year. A guesthouse was build in 1964 to show there hospitality.
