Can you remember a time when you had a really good chat with a friend? It doesn’t matter whether they were sitting right next to you or on the other end of a phone line, simply talking to them probably made a huge difference to how you felt. We all have a different mixture of friends. Some we may have known for just a short time, while others may have stuck by us and been best friends since childhood. But no matter how long you have known them for, you still need to work at it to keep that friendship going. Of course, we all stay in touch in different ways. For example, if you are on your computer a lot and one particular friend is as well, you might catch each other online from time to time. It’s easy enough to use a messaging system to talk in real time while you are surfing the internet as well. For others there is nothing quite like phoning a friend to talk over a problem or share in some juicy gossip. Regardless of how you keep in touch you can really benefit in a lot of ways when you have friends that you talk to regularly. It’s certainly a good release to be able to talk to a friend about something that is happening in your life. Suppose you are in danger of losing your job, for example. How would you feel if you had to keep all those worries and concerns to yourself, and you had no one to talk about them with? The chances are that you would feel even worse as the days went by, even if you did eventually keep your job. But imagine being able to get home, pick up the phone and simply call your best friend. The relief of simply being able to talk about the situation can make you feel so much better, both in the short and the long term. Your friend is removed from the situation, so they will be able to give you better advice on what to do and how to react. If you think you’re letting some of your friendships slip behind a bit, then it is never too late to take some time out to do something about it. It doesn’t matter whether it’s been a few days, weeks or months since you last spoke – all you need to do is write to them, phone them or send them an email to get back in the loop again. And with the prospect of cheap calls readily available, you don’t need to worry about being on the phone for ages either! Isla Campbell writes for a digital marketing agency.
