As a day trader working from my home office I find myself curious to learn about what traders think is the best custom trading computer. I have asked colleagues and people in the business and they all seem to have their own preferences and tastes. It is interesting to hear how this almost has become a personal question to some extent, I guess, we all have the need to give it a personal touch to the space that surround us. I have received different type of feedback, some prefer to have their computers facing north, some prefer to follow their feng shui beliefs, others, are just practical people who want to take advantage of the space provided. I was happy with these results; however, there were some important factors that were not mentioned when talking about the ideal custom trading computer. It is really funny to see traders with different size monitors. It looks like they could not make up their mind on what size they really wanted to get. I always wonder if that is a reflection of their trading. They are not sure as if they go too long, or too short. Remember to keep it simple. Avoid clutter and distraction. Your mind needs to be focused on trading and not on all the little gadgets and things you keep around your computer. One keyboard and one mouse should be enough. You will not trade better by having more buttons available to push at once. Having a custom trading computer setup should be more about the components of the machine itself. You want your computer to be fast, reliable and dependable. You want to know you have a good backup system in case of emergencies and a redundant internet connection in case one goes down. The computer location will be secondary to the most important thing: What is inside the machine matters the most! So don’t forget to do your homework. Last but not least, get a backup computer. This computer will be very convenient in case of emergencies. Just make sure it is always ready to go when needed. Do not forget about it and use it as a night table. Make sure it works properly and ready to be called on demand. As you can see, regardless of your taste on location and space, there are very important factors that need to be taken into consideration when thinking about your trading computer setup.
