However the distance for the race underwent multiple changes over the years. The race that commenced in 1867 at the Jerome Park racetrack is probably one of the oldest running races and run at a variety of distances until finalized at one mile in 2005. The Champagne Stakes was initially run for a distance for only six furlongs, a distance that took into consideration the lack of stamina in a two year old but towards the end of the 19th century, during the years 1891 and 1904, the distance of the stake race was increased by one more furlong. The race shifted venues and ended up at Widener Course where it came to be run at almost seven furlongs, a distance short by 165 feet from 1905 to 1932 but in 1933, the distance was rounded off to 6 ½ furlongs for ease of calculation. It was then shifted to a distance of one mile, 1 1/8 miles and then 1 1/16 miles until they finalized the one mile distance in 2005 and closed the argument. The race is run at Belmont Park each year in October and is a Breeder’s Cup Challenge criteria. Won by champion colts, Champagne Stakes defined what many race horses were capable of owing to its distance and test of the colt’s endurance to run the length without running out of gas. It also gave them the chance to qualify to Breeder’s Cup Juvenile races that again were imperative to predicting Triple Crown contenders. Numerous Triple Crown winners like Seattle Slew, Count Fleet have made their disposition felt in the Champagne Stakes. Other Hall of Famers like Riva Ridge, easy Goer and Spectacular Bid made a mark as a two year old and three year old favourite through the Champagne Stakes. The fastest track record is held by Devil’s Bag, who in turn broke the mile long record set by Seattle Slew set at 1:32:40 by running it a fifth of a second faster.
