Businesses stand to benefit a great deal from the use of SOA simply because of the fact that it promotes modularity of a typical system, much like the way early computer and business systems were designed in the 70s. There are people who not only see this virtual revival of past system architectural design, but they also see that the similarity of SOA with these past achievements somehow dampen the excitement of using this enterprise system architecture. With SOA, not only do you get the independence and freedom of doing what you need to do with your system, but also you get to optimize your system, regardless of what software is running it and still get all of the advantages of being connected with all of the world’s network systems with no communication problems whatsoever. Its main advantage is that it promotes the continued use of whatever enterprise system that you have, and still be able to get connected everyone and everywhere. Unlike past attempts to get connected where you needed to use certain software or hardware that companies make to be connected and pay for those new software/hardware, in effect doing a legacy migration, it does not care whether you have the latest hardware or software installed. The only thing that is important is that the data that all other systems need can be translated to and from your system effectively and in the shortest possible time with the minimal wasted network and processor cycles. Although there are even indications that SOA will not require you to do a software conversion to get interconnected with the rest of the systems, there may still be certain things that you need to update on your current enterprise system in order to take advantage of SOA. The last benefit that SOA promises is the reduced testing time of most compatible systems. Since this architecture promises full documented individual systems, all you have to do is to follow the documentation properly and you are ready to go, and because one of its main drives is its autonomy of the individual systems, you are still free to use whatever you need to use in operating your current system without having to be left behind by faster systems that are within its bounds. With its advantages, there are criticisms and fears to this form of architecture. Since this will be a radically different form of enterprise architecture, there may be different security issues that will arise that cannot be sufficiently covered by the present forms for network and system security systems. A new tactic of defending against attacks may be formulated. Another fear is the additional layers that may be added the present crop of XML or the language that is used to display the data that we see on the internet. This may add an additional burden internet related software and hardware that we use today. SOA is another step forward in the ever increasing need to better services and faster delivery of it to those who need it. Although SOA is still in the developing stages, the promise of faster delivery of data through interoperability of differing systems and cuts through all of the software and hardware overhead of these different systems to give you what you need still makes business owners and the IT industry excited and looking forward to the next evolution of data delivery.
