Just when you thought you couldn't spend anymore this month on supplies, school supplies, new technology and student fees, you realize that your kids have almost nothing to wear. Here are five tips to get you geared up for school, in style, without busting the bank. 1. Start a clothing allowance for each child. I do this with each of my kids, and it has really helped them to learn how to operate within a budget. It helps my kids to understand that if they buy the $50 jacket, they'll have no new pairs of jeans until their clothing allowance resets the next season. 2. Learn to sew. You can save a bundle and your kids will have tailor-made clothing. 3. Check Etsy.com for imaginative and unusual items. If you don't sew yourself, this is a great way to get some unique handmade items, and you won't believe how low some of the prices are for quality, handmade items. 4. Check out the consignment stores in your area, as well as local thrift stores. While your tweens and teens might balk at the idea, they might be pleasantly surprised at the bargains of very-gently-used and even never-worn clothing. Some of these items still have the original tags attached. A friend of mine gives each of her kids a 20 dollar bill at the door of the thrift store. She tells them they must each find an outfit that they will actually wear – and then they can keep the change. It's amazing what little bargain hunters kids can become when given the right incentive! If your kids have clothing they never wear, consider turning them into the consignment store for resale, as well. Then you'll have more money to spend later. 5. Check the sales sections of Target, Walmart, as well as Kohls and JC Penney's. Each of these stores have crazy low prices on clothing items throughout the year in their clearance bin. Sometimes you can find a printable Kohls coupon to save even more. (These are often released on Thursday mornings and expire on Sundays. Also keep in mind when you're shopping in the mall that many of these stores offer the same merchandise online, and come with coupon codes that you can redeem for bigger savings. Justice for Girls, for example, is a popular mall store for tweens and offers a fairly constant 40% off onlinecoupon code when you shop through their website (Find the latest code here: http://www.susies-coupons.com/just-girls.htm ) You can also often find printable coupons online that you can redeem in stores such as Aeropostale and The Childrens Place.
