Not everyone is an amazing cook and every extraordinary chef has room for growth. Many people incrementally improve their cooking skills over years and even decades. Before cooking your first meal, choose a simple recipe. This tips can better your cooking approach.

Try to keep your spices and herbs in a dark, cool area of your kitchen. If light, humidity and heat are present, these items will begin to lose their flavor. A lot of the time, you can expect an herb or a space to retain flavor for about a year. Whole spices can stay fresh for up to five years. Store your herbs and spices correctly, so that they will stay fresh and keep their full flavor!

If you are going to make a stir-fry dish, slice the meat on the bias, as thinly as possible. Some people find it difficult to cut the meat thin, but it is very important. Take the cut of meat out when it is a bit firm but has not become frozen and begin to slice it across the grain diagonally.

Your spices should be stored in a cool place that is free of light. Shelf life can be significantly decreased for those spices which have been exposed to too much light, dampness and heat. You can preserve the flavor and freshness of your spices by storing them in a dark, cool spot. Keeping your spices fresh can improve the taste of every recipe you prepare.

Make your meal preparation go more quickly by preparing some of the ingredients ahead of time. Check the recipe you're using to see if some preparation can be done without the partially prepared dish spoiling. There is a lot of preparation that you can take care of a day in advance. By doing this, your cooking task will be quick and easy - even for very complex recipes.

Burgers cooked on the grill are delicious; however, many times they stick to your grill. Try brushing vegetable oil on the cooking surface prior to cooking so that food does not stick.

Add chicken broth to vegetables when you cook them. Not only will chicken broth help to keep vegetables from getting stuck to the pan, but they will add some nice flavors to the dish. Chicken broth is readily available at most grocery stores, and it is very affordably priced.

Soy products and beans are a wonderful place to get protein if you need to add some to your diet. You can buy these in almost any grocery store. You can fry tofu or add it to soups, seasoned well, for a yummy protein alternative. Boil the beans with herbs to make a tasty protein-filled dish.

Substitute water for other more flavorful liquids, in order to spice up your meals. Broth is a great substitute for water, and milk adds delicious flavor and extra nutrition to soups and stews. Instead of milk, try sour cream, yogurt or buttermilk. A good method for increasing your nutritional intake is by increasing the amount of liquids you drink throughout the day.

Carefully measure the oil you are going to cook with. You never want to pour oil straight from the bottle. Most oils are very high in fat, so when you measure them with care, you can keep the fat content lower. That way, you know exactly how much oil you use and you can monitor your caloric content of your meals easier.

Learning how to employ better cooking techniques is fun and useful. In fact, learning to prepare delicious meals is almost as enjoyable as eating them.
