If you have every considered cooking with skewers, you should keep a few things in mind. Twisted or square shaped metal skewers hold the food better than round ones will.

To maintain the flavor and freshness of spices and herbs, make sure you keep them stored in someplace that is cool and dark. Humidity and heat, in addition to light, will cause spices and herbs to lose their flavor. Ground herbs and spices can retain full flavor for about a year. Spices that are raw, or whole, can keep the original flavor for as long as five years, though it usually falls somewhere between three and five. As long as they are stored properly, they will hold onto their flavor for several years.

When preparing stir-fry dishes, slice meat as thinly as possible and on its bias. Perfectly sliced meat takes time and patience, though. When the meat is firm, but prior to it becoming completely frozen, remove it from the freezer. Slice the meat across the grain at an angle of 45 degrees.

Make sure that all of your spices are stored away from heat and light. If the spices become too hot, or moist from humidity, it can shorten their shelf life. Too much light exposure also does this. You can preserve the flavor and freshness of your spices by storing them in a dark, cool spot. Your culinary preparations will taste better if your spices are fresh.

You should limit the amount of seasoning you apply to meat until you have tried it. A lot of foods require you to season them carefully; for instance meatloaf, hamburgers or meatballs. Do not try and cook the whole piece of meat right after adding seasoning. Instead, make a small patty out of a little piece and cook that first. After that, you can either cook the rest or adjust the seasoning accordingly.

During cooking, it's essential that you have sharp knives accessible. Dull knives not only are ineffective, but they're also dangerous! If you have to work on forcing a dull knife to go through something, you're much more likely to accidentally cut yourself in the process than with the one quick, clean cut of a sharpened knife.

When preparing a meal for an important event, such as a date or a dinner with your boss, cook a dish you are already familiar with. Avoid trying out new recipes or new ingredients in such a situation. Making a meal you are confident will taste good can make the night more enjoyable.

As you have seen, the key to becoming better at cooking is continuing to learn all you can. Enjoying cooking is much more than simply preparing food. One of the most interesting aspects is learning about new foods and the various ways of cooking. You also must know how to share your skills with others. Cooking is a skill which should be be developed and sharpened, as well as shared with other people.
