Most people see cooking as a menial chore. However, cooking can be rewarding and enjoyable. It can also help to contribute towards a healthier lifestyle. People who are interested in cooking are always looking for tips to improve their skills, and the information that follows will help you on your quest for knowledge.

When you shelve an herb or a spice, make sure it's dark and cool. Many factors can cause herbs and spices to lose their flavor, especially humidity and light. Spices and herbs that are ground usually retain their flavor for close to a year. It is possible for whole spices to remain flavorful for up to five years. As long as they are stored properly, they will hold onto their flavor for several years.

Keep spices in a dark and cool place. When they are stored in the sun, they lose shelf life because of exposure. Keeping your spices in darkened, cool areas will lend extra longevity and flavor. These fresh spices will help add flavor to your meals, making them tastier!

Do not throw away the product of your hard work. In a separate bowl, blend 1 Tbs of corn starch with 2 Tbs of water. Stir this into the sauce to thicken it up. Make sure you add starch slowly and are constantly stirring the sauce so it doesn't get too thick. Always use an airtight container to store baking ingredients such as sugar or flour in the kitchen. These sorts of containers will help keep all of your foods fresh and safe from bugs. You can get them at a number of places and are well worth the small amount of money.

Make a lot of stock if you are going to make it ahead of time. Instead of making a single serving, make a whole stock pot and save the leftovers so you can freeze them. You can use the stock as a base for all kinds of soups or even casseroles. First, cool the stock and then stick it in the freezer.
