Very little of man’s life is lived separately and away from others. It is very necessary that a person learns to “live together”. In Group Discussion there are two sources open to a person if he wants to stay in the group. He has to give way to what a whole group thinks or he has to win over the group to his way of thinking. On the part of everyone in the group, there must be both giving way and gaining at the same time. A member of the group has the responsibility of making a positive and constructive contribution to the common reflection of the group and he must also have the duty of recognizing the right of others to a particular view point and also the value of these view points. Here is the brief description about conducting a group discussion. Method of Conduct There are normally eight members in a group. They are made to sit in a semicircular position so that each member could see and hear everyone clearly. There are certain other factors that determine the proceedings of the Group Discussion: (1) If the aim is teaching and learning and the level of the group is intellectually not very high then the Group Discussion is held under the guidance of a group leader who selects a topic with consensus. He announces the subject or writes it on the blackboard the proceedings of the discussion can start in following ways: • For simple and familiar subjects group leader asks questions related to subject and discussion follows. • For a little tougher and uncommon subject’s group leader first gives a brief introduction to the subject and without being biased, frames question for both side and discussion starts. In both the situations the group leader has to summarize and conclude the discussion, hence some expertise approach is expected from the group leader. A group leader must be impartial and should not force his view over the group. This is a fact about group discussion. (3) When discussion is to test the knowledge and oration of the members and the level of intelligence of the group are quite high then another method is adopted to conduct the proceedings of the Group Discussion. In such a situation the person conducting the Group Discussion after announcing the subject goes to background and acts merely as the observer without taking any active part in the discussion.
