Our body image is an integral part to all our lives . it informs much of what we do, many people make their first judgment of a person based on their physical appearance. Success in our society can be heavily geared towards success being based on looks and body appearance not the substance within. The media portrays many body images which are subconsciously push on to us as the way we should look, if we look this way our lives will be richer an happier. For many of us these body images are un-attainable or even just not healthy. This discrepancy between the way we are subconsciously told to look and the way we see ourselves can end up being a great source of pain for us. So it is no wonder then that a large industry has arisen to cater for the insecurities of those who want to change the way they look. It’s this very discrepancy that has been created, that many industry professional focus on to exploit the week and venerable in to parting with their money. Now, of course I am not saying that the fitness and weight loss industry is a bad thing. If people want to lose weight or they want to lead a healthier life this should be encourage and facilitated. The problem is the aggressive nature of the media that pushes these unhealthy body shapes on us and the faddy part of the fitness industry which prays on those who want to attain the unattainable body shapes. The saying that looks are only skin deep, gives many a sense of optimism but looks seem to have more prominence than this throw away saying infers. Do we put this pressure on ourselves? Or is it an external force which is squeezing and pushing us to change. The one thing we are told we have control over is our weight, there seems to be an underlying tone that we are the way we are through what we have eaten. The suggestion is we chose to eat too much and therefore we can chose to change. I feel we are pushed in to exercising through guilt and this could be why so many of us fail to change our body shape. As I mentioned early exercise it good, exercise has a positive effect on our mind and body. We need activity in our lives to stimulate us physically and mentally. We need to find the right motivation for ourselves, not for others. If you do not have a true personal motivation it becomes very difficult to make those life style changes that will really help you improve your life. The are many people out their offering the gold nugget to weight loss and change of body shape. It can be overwhelming when you are bombarded by so many offers claiming the world and delivering very little. It’s true that nothing in life that’s worth having comes easily, that include reducing your weight or changing your body shape. The key here is to make sure that you know how to go about exercise the right way, I mean if you have the right motivation to exercise then you need the right tools to succeed. My tips to you would be to avoid the fads and concentrate on those small changes everyday that will have a large overall impact. It’s not about destroying yourself one week and then eating McDonalds for the next. We need subtle and sustainable changes that will have long term results on our appearance, if this is what we truly want.
