From a simple plastic fire truck that scraped the pavement as I rode around the backyard as a toddler, to pretending to defibrillate the next “patient” (usually an unwilling sibling) with two orange pucks from my parents air hockey table….a career in emergency medicine seemed engraved in my blood from early on. Like so many others, I grew up watching a variety of television shows featuring EMTs and Paramedics arriving at the scene of the latest catastrophe, complete with lights and sirens blaring…ready and able to save the day. In short…they were my heroes…and henceforth began, in that very instant, a life-long dream. For many people, the desire to pursue a dream is often overshadowed by the need to fulfill life’s obligations. When faced with the choice of taking the time, energy, and financial means required to do something, and become something, you may have always envisioned for yourself, versus providing for a family, staying with a safer and steady career path, or otherwise remaining on the current stream that life has tossed you into, it becomes nearly impossible for most to simply “jump ship” and enter the world of pursuing true career success and happiness. This dilemma is no different for those who desire to enter the world of emergency medicine. Fortunately, there are now options available that make it possible to continue the pursuit of that dream while still maintaining the need to continue with life’s obligations, such as continuing work in your current career, raising a family, and many others. With the vast prevalence of the internet throughout the world, online classes and degrees have become hugely popular, and continue to advance in their level of both offerings, as well as the technological advances required to ensure that you will receive the education you truly desire. My personal search led me to find both an online EMT school, as well as an online Paramedic school. There are many different schools that currently offer these courses online. However, when researching an online EMT school or online Paramedic school, look for one that features the proper accreditation. This will ensure that the time, money, and effort put into pursuing your EMT or Paramedic certification will be worthwhile once you have completed the courses. In addition, search for a school that offers certain technological advances such as the ability to attend virtual classrooms. This element allows you to attend school from the comfort of your own home computer, yet still allows for interaction with both other students and the instructor…all valuable prospects in both enhancing your learning experience and getting the most out of your time and your certification process. Also, look for a school that offers college credit for completion of the course. A few higher-level online programs will actually allow for extensive college credit towards a related degree path and will often work in conjunction with a major college or university.
