If you want to write a book, become famous, and make a million dollars, you've got your work cut out for you. But you already knew that, right? The good news is that it's easier than ever to move from where you are to full-fledged, best-selling novelist. That's because when it comes to writing, the marketplace has decidedly shifted in favor of the little guy. In order to see why, we've got to understand a little bit about economics first. Don't worry, it will be over quickly. If you were to write, print, and sell your own book, it would cost a small fortune. First, you'd need a printing press. Then you'd need to lug your books around to all the bookstores. But according to something called "economies of scale," you don't have to do that. Only one person needs to buy the printing press. Then he or she can take books from plenty of people, and sell them. In order to cover their costs, they'll take a cut of the sales. This presents a problem for the printing press owners, or publishers. In order to make sure they are going to make their money back, they've got to be reasonably certain that they can sell plenty of books before they'll even consider taking an author's book. How do they consider this? For one thing, it helps of the guy is already famous. Or if he or she has already written a book. But somebody who's never published before? It's really hard to read somebody's book and determine if it's going to be successful or not. They tried, and lost plenty of money. There's just no repeatable method. That's why as a starting author, it's been incredibly hard to break into the business. Until now. Because with our rapidly advancing economy, with all of its technological developments, the publishers are no longer needed. Now people buy books directly from the source, in downloadable, electronic from. And if you're a writer, this is great news. It costs absolutely nothing to publish a book, and you can sell if for whatever price you want. If you've got the skill to write a decent novel, and the determination and persistence to promote it on your own, you'll eventually be successful. Then you've got a couple options. As a successful author, you can now go through those large publishers. Or you can continue to write your own books, publish them yourself, and market them yourself. Either way, it's much easier today to become a successful, published author.
