Some prep schools may be hours away from your house or even outside of your state. If so, you should not necessarily count out this option. Get to know the advantages of sending your child to a boarding school and then consider whether this is the right option for your family. One of the most common reasons for boarding prep schools is the access to great academics. This tends to be what they are known for, and it is why there is often a long waiting list or very low acceptance rate. Many academies of this type have great relationships with some of the top colleges, which means the students know what it takes to get in. Of course, the classes themselves may be tougher because they are helping students do better on tests and be more prepared for college. In addition, they might have access to a wider variety of classes than they would in a public school or really any local academic institution that does not get the same great ratings. In fact, some parents send their kids to boarding prep schools in order to offer a greater variety of sports, not just academics. If your child is interested in a sport that is not available at the academies and clubs near your house, you could be doing him or her a favor by sending him or her to a school that does offer these options. In fact, your student could end up with a scholarship or other impressive recognition for how well he or she does in certain sports, so it makes sense to offer all the opportunities possible. This may require sending your child to live and study hours away, but it is often worth it in the end. Another reason to choose boarding prep schools is to build a sense of independence in your child. Many kids have trouble taking care of basic responsibilities while they live at home, especially if they think their parents will do the job for them. But when they simply live with other kids their age, they may gain the same sense of independence that they would get from college, only sooner. If your student has trouble managing tasks you think he or she should be able to handle by now, attendance at a school that requires him or her to live far away may be a good idea. Of course, only you know what it is good for your child. If you have a feeling he or she would not excel at most prep schools that are far from you, you can always choose one that is closer when possible.
