Today we take a refrigerator for granted. But actually the refrigerator is a relatively new invention from the beginning of the 20th century. And until the mid-40s it was not mass produced. In many Third World countries it is still a luxury, many people cannot afford. Is your refrigerator more than 10 years old? Then you should buy a new one. It will save you a lot of energy (and money) by replacing it with a new, more energy-friendly model. The most important thing to consider is the size. If you buy a large refrigerator, there has to be room in the kitchen for it. A normal refrigerator has a capacity from around 18 to 28 cubic feet (including the space occupied by shelves and hardware). If you have a large family, you might consider the big models, while an 18-22 cubic feet model is enough for small families. There is also a door-choice to consider. You can find refrigerators with top-mount (with the freezer above), bottom-mount (with the freezer below) and side-by-side doors. The advantage of the bottom-mount model is that the most used food is found in the eye-level. The modern refrigerators are normally frost free and do have power failure alarm. So no more melted water in the kitchen, because of power accidents. Other convenient options are chilled water and ice cubes. The refrigerator is one of the most energy-consuming appliances in the home, so you should buy an energy-efficient refrigerator with the Energy Star seal. The price might be higher, but you will save a lot of money of the energy bill. Do you like your refrigerator in white, black, almond or stainless-steel? Find the one that matches the other appliances and the rest of your kitchen. Your homes resale value can even increase, if you choose a stainless-steel refrigerator. And do not worry about the cleaning; you can buy a faux stainless-steel refrigerator. Before buying a refrigerator, do your homework. Read ratings, reviews and consumer reports. Do also look at the price; including the shipping- and installation costs. If you do not mind, you can often find refrigerators with cosmetic defects at a much lower price.
