The term online poker freerolls might seem like a pretty standard sentence where a lot of words have been used to describe the same thing: Freeroll. This is not so though. The phrase ‘online poker freerolls’ describes that it is a game on the internet (online) and it is in the group of games categorized as poker and that it is free game to play (freeroll). The reason why this is not as obvious as it might seem and freeroll itself wouldn’t describe all of these things is that word freeroll origins from a totally different place and had nothing to do with poker at all. The term ‘freeroll’ origins from Las Vegas in the early sixties, and the free rolls where used on casinos when new guests arrived, then they would receive a few chips not worth much but as a gratitude from the casinos for choosing them. These chips could then be used for rolls at either the slot machines or the slot machines. If they still use these in Las Vegas I don’t know – though certainly not the places I have been to. But last time I visited Malta – a small island state in the Mediterranean Sea located between Italy in Europe and Libya in Africa – I visited their Casino and there I received a freeroll of 10 euros just for entering one of their two casinos in the capital. So you see the terms online and poker are not pleonasms when you talk of freerolls. It is right though that the term freeroll has become more and more used in the world of online poker but the term still exists in other parts of the gambling business and is also widely used in the online community of Bingo. So why not just call it an online free poker tournament instead? Well the reason main reason is that this term is not used by the online poker rooms. They refrain in general from categorizing any of their tournaments as free online poker tournaments instead they name them poker freerolls or just freerolls. What we have to deal with is what the academics call a discourse battle. The battle is on what a word represents in meaning and significance. These lingual battles happens all the times just look at the words and phrases you most commonly use and have a look into how these were used 50 or 200 years ago – trust me you’ll find some pretty cool stuff. The story of discourse battles is pretty much the same as the history of the human mentality. Let’s get back to the Online Poker Freerolls – this term is still widely used – and it might be that the term will be forgotten in time or only Poker Freeroll will remain but today when you look at it in a quantitative perspective Google have around half a million searches on the exact phrase ‘Online Poker Freerolls’ per year so the expression is certainly not dead yet and my estimate is that it will stay a powerful and meaningful phrase for many years ahead. But unless the ‘offline’ casinos start using this term more and promote it like their online cousins the term ‘online’ will lose its meaning with time in the phrase ‘OnlinePoker Freerolls’.
