With Jason Bateman and Ryan Reynolds, masters of improv and deadpan comedy, one would think all you need to do is let them loose and work off one another and see where they take you. And when you have a screenplay done by Scott Moore and Jon Lucas with Moore writing the first and much funnier The Hangover, you should be starting off in a good way. But this too long film by David Dobkin of Wedding Crashers fame and Fred Claus Shame, is all over the place in tone by moving awkwardly from sappiness feel good scenes to highly daring comic blasts and then back again to sap happy. It is as if the movie is not sure whether they want to be sappy or not or, well, you as the viewer should decide. Body swapping movies are what learning lessons are all about. The grass is much greener on the opposite side of the fence until it needs watering. Bateman is Dave Lockwood a successful and wealthy lawyer in Atlanta and he and his wife Jamie, played by Leslie Mann, are happily married. They have a darling five year old daughter and a pair of twins who are two years old. But Lockwood lacks a life of fun and spontaneity. Reynolds’ character Mitch Planko is his best friend from childhood and is steadfastly single spending his days hanging in the man cave enjoying bong hits, occasionally auditioning for commercials. When night rolls around he gets his leg across with as many different women as possible. But he pines to have someone at home to feel secure and loved. One night following more drinks than were necessary Mitch and Dave use a fountain to relieve themselves and discuss who has the better life, with both insisting it is the other. When they awaken the following morning they find out their bodies have been switched that lead to a number of mostly predictable but often amusing scenes. At the law firm where Dave is nearing partner status, Mitch, playing Dave uses his bravado to get through the conservative law firm, while Dave, playing Mitch entertains some late night booty action from one of the women on Mitch’s long list. Bateman benefits most from the switch as an actor, having the wild side of Mitch in him so his part is the showier of the two. The conservative rigid character Reynolds has by having Dave in his body does not allow him to cut loose with the exception of a soft porn scene he enjoys. As a law associate that is charismatic and sexy and lusted over by Dave, Olivia Wilde’s character goes on a secret date with Dave in Mitch’s body. She comes across as brainy and with a personality instead of showing lots of flesh and making her pure eye candy that many comedies that are male dominated may have done. That scene alone makes you wish the entire film had gone the route of the high road. Watch Movies Online
