Many people are asking: “Are cartoons and anime just the same thing?” Perhaps they share a similarity in the way they are made, either hand-drawn or computer-generated. However, with regard to the story elements, Western cartoons and Japanese animation are ages away from each other. It does not take an expert to distinguish these differences—even a five-year-old fond of watching cartoons can tell. First, most cartoons are gag shows where the roadrunner escapes unharmed while the bad coyote gets a taste of his own medicine. You will see only little of that in anime where there is a distinct plot of the battle between good and evil, magical and political. Solid plots always make the viewers anticipate the next series of events, making them want to watch anime even more. Character design for both kinds of animation is also different. You will notice that cartoon characters only have at least three fingers, defiant of anatomy. Anime characters, on the other hand, have a complete set of fingers and toes, which make them more humanlike. Body proportions are also more reasonable in anime than in cartoons. When you watch anime videos, you will notice the difference in character development, too. Since anime usually runs in a chronological order, character development is also a gradual process. Cartoon characters are usually fixed for the whole series with the bunny forever outwitting the hunter. Anime characters take a series of events for them to mature and experience life-changing events. The total running time also differs: a cartoon skit only lasts around 10 minutes average—shorter than the 24 minutes in anime videos. A single cartoon episode consists of usually three different skits to total 30 minutes. This makes cartoons somewhat more numerous than anime titles in terms of the number of episodes. However, in some titles, this is not always the case. You may be surprised to realize that anime and cartoons are indeed worlds apart. Despite both being the offspring of animation, the elements that make up the series differ. If you still have doubts about the difference between the two, watch cartoons and anime videos at the same time—you will see the difference.
