What usually comes into your mind whenever you hear the word anime? Are you thinking about television series and downloadable movies? Anime production is more than these. It is not only limited to the small screen as it comes in a number of formats designed to give its audiences a different viewing experience. OVA Original Video Animation or OVA is similar to television series, except that it is released direct to video. The OVAs consist of 2-20 episodes featuring side stories of the main TV series. Such episodes are obviously shorter than feature films and can be watched in video tape, VCD, and DVD formats. Examples of OVAs are “Bleach”, “Bubblegum Crisis”, and “Tenchi Muyo”. Television Series More popular than OVAs, television series are considered a staple in anime industry. Each episode in an anime television series is 23 minutes in length and scheduled to be played on a 30-minute time slot daily. Some television series consist of 26 episodes, while others consist of only 13 episodes, also known as half seasons. Some of the popular television series of all time are “Gundam”, “Naruto”, and “Full Metal Alchemist.” Feature Films Feature films are anime movies that offer the greatest quality of animation. These feature a number of subjects and are distributed not only in Japan, but also abroad. Before they are made available in other formats, feature films are initially distributed in theaters for a specific period of time. A typical anime feature film is more than 60 minutes in length and usually related to television series or OVAs. Short Films and Compilations This is also a type of anime movies that are 15-30 minutes in length and often shown as double or triple features. Some short films feature individual subjects, while compilations feature two or more films touching on a common subject. “Robot Carnival” and “Animatrix” are two of the popular anime short films released in Japan. Serial Films These are anime movies that feature several episodes from a television series edited into one full-length film. A typical serial film may have additional footages to give a twist to the main story and may run longer than regular feature films. Examples of popular serial films are "Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex: The Laughing Man” and "Macross Frontier: The False Diva".
