Watching movies is a fun hobby that countless film enthusiasts and people from all walks of life around the world enjoy. It can be relaxing, entertaining and even educational. Historians record that on June 19, 1905 a group of around 450 enthused individuals gathered to attend the opening of the world’s first theater–the Nickelodeon in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The storefront movie house had 96 seats with tickets that cost 5 cents each. The term “nickelodeon” is a combination of the words “nickel” and “odeon,” which is the Greek word for theater. This entertainment venue was the idea of showman Harry Davis and his partner, John Harris. Their initial presentations included vaudeville acts, live music accompaniment and black-and-white silent films. Nickelodeons became a world hit, and by 1907, well over 2 million Americans have already experienced the inexpensive entertainment to be had in these theaters. Other theaters soon followed suit, such as Bijou Dream, Gem, and Tivoli which were established in different regions. The rest, as everyone says, is history. From those inexpensive and unadorned motion picture theaters, the cinema industry has truly come a long way. Nowadays, people don’t have to queue up at the cinema as they can watch movies online for free. Indeed, the theater has evolved by leaps and bounds. In the early days of cinema, nickelodeons were open for twice a week and showed only about five different films usually comprised of a comedy, an adventure, a novelty, a drama, and a documentary. Now that more and more people can watch movies online for free, they can indulge in an almost infinite selection of movies, even hard-to-find ones. The Internet has certainly made it possible for everyone to watch movies online for free without having to travel downtown and fall in line at the local cinema. People can experience quality movie entertainment at a café or curl up in the comfort of their couch and watch as many films as they can squeeze into their busy schedules.
