Fans of the Bravo reality television competition series Top Chef will recall Josie Smith-Malave as one of the finalists during the second season of the show. She has also previously worked as a sous chef for the restaurant Marlow and Sons, found in Brooklyn. The openly gay Smith-Malave recently spoke with the New York Post regarding an alleged assault that was directed against herself, her sister Julie, and a friend of theirs last September 1. She stated that they were harassed and beaten, and that she detected a great deal of anger from the group of attackers. The former Top Chef contestant claimed that it was a sizable gang of young adults, who were all very upset and angry. In her interview with the tabloid, she said that she’d never had a similar experience prior to what she said happened that night. In addition, she also claimed that not only did their aggressors beat them up while others in the group just came to observe and laugh at them, they also brought along cameras to take pictures of what had happened and further humiliate the trio of women. According to an official investigation, the alleged incident began when Smith-Malave and her companions were requested to exit from a bar named Partners, which can be found in Sea Cliff, New York. In a statement given out by the office of attorney Yetta Kurland, once the trio had departed from the place, a group of roughly 10 adults followed them on the way out. This larger pack then allegedly began taunting and harassing Smith-Malave and her cohorts, yelling out slurs and throwing various things at them such as cups and sticks. Smith-Malave wound up with several bruises, while her companion Durwood sustained a head injury. One of the suspects arrested for allegedly being part of the attack was a 20-year-old homeless man named Matthew Walli.
