When you look at a building block you can see nothing interesting. The design is so-so, the look is so plain, and it can do nothing but be a “block” yet it went down from generation to generation simply because it clicked. For years now, different designs and ways to make a building block more interesting were discovered since its first appearance in 1693. The first alphabet nursery block was created by an English Philosopher and declared that if you put letters on dice and other playthings it could actually teach children to read and will find learning and reading more enjoyable. In 1798 blocks called “rational toys” came to be. The building blocks were intended to teach children about physics and gravity to make them aware and interested. There were also blocks to show spatial relationships that can demonstrate to children how different parts can make a whole. In 1820 the first large scale manufacturing of the educational blocks finally happen. The blocks were especially created to be colorful to entice children and encourage them to play with it while learning. The surface of the block was embossed with numbers or letters then painted with different colors for added appeal. In 1850 a published children’s book entitled “A Book of Stories from the Home Treasury” included a terracotta toy blocks which the children loved. The popularity of a building block went on as it continued to help children with acquiring knowledge in a fun and easy way. As time goes by, different building blocks soon invaded the market and it still does even today. In 2003 the National Toy Hall of Fame inducted the ABC blocks as part of their collection at the Strong Museum and gave it the title as one of America’s toys with national importance. Looking years back, a building block may not even be thought of something to bring great significance. Today, it is still being regarded as one of the most important tools in teaching a child during early years of learning. Building blocks may look so simple yet it is an effective teaching tool that you can rely on. The learning blocks don’t even cost much and they are very affordable that anyone can avail them.
