Undoubtedly the biggest modern Broadway hit, Wicked has been exciting fans for years now with its fantastic story, fleshed out characters, stunning special effects and catchy songs. The play has earned itself several Tony awards, and was nominated for nearly a dozen in 2004. So what keeps people raving about this show, even years after it’s come out? A lot of it has to do with the story itself, which presents a creative twist on the classic story of The Wizard of Oz. It’s a kind of behind the scenes look at the relationships between the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch, as well as the duplicitous Wizard of Oz. But it turns our preconceptions on their head: Elphaba, the green-skinned girl who grows up to live in infamy as the Wicked Witch, is in fact a sincere person who tries to do right. Glinda is indeed a bubbly, pink, feel-good witch, but she’s mostly a vacant ditz—if a well-meaning vacant ditz. Beginning when both Glinda and Elphaba are students in magic, the story follows them as they end up forming a friendship, breaking apart when a love for the same man ruins that friendship, and eventually becoming friends again. The Wizard of Oz plays an interesting role, as well. He’s depicted more as a deceptive everyman who has no special power, but uses his literal smoke and mirrors to impress others and make them think he’s more powerful than he really is. This ultimately leads him to pursuing a propaganda campaign against those who would usurp his power. He’s revealed to be a mediocre man who very desperately wants to be appreciated, and is willing to scapegoat others if it means he can keep his position of power. The songs throughout the play are witty and clever, and very catchy. It’s hard not to leave the theater humming your favorite, and you’re very likely to end up buying the soundtrack to the show after seeing it live. Wicked tickets get you all this and more.
