You will be fascinated to know that the adoption of the robe was not a planned thing and it happened incidentally. Members of the clergy and aspiring clerics who used to attend classes in church used long robes with hoods to stay warm while they were studying. They did not wear it intentionally but just to keep off the cold weather from their body. This wearing of gowns eventually became a habit and those who saw then presumed that scholars wear robes. As the time went on most scholars as graduation dresses recognized the gowns. From then on, it became the official graduation dresses all over the world. With few adjustments made by different universities, you were able to differentiate the different candidates from different academic levels. Hence tradition of graduation robes evolved. During 1980’s intercollegiate committee was formed to regulate the wearing of academic and graduation dresses made sure that each and every part of the gown has an importance and indicate what education institution one has passed though without even asking. The tassels come with different colors to tell which academic level or faculty you are from and are worn on top of the mortarboard. They are only supposed to be worn by students who are graduating with a doctorate degrees .It was adopted from the student who used to wear hooded ropes in the past. The long flowing robe worn as graduation dresses also has a very important for various academic levels for different schools. The doctorate robe has long sleeves, three velvet strips, and facing while the bachelor degree graduate has pointed sleeves. The graduation tassels alsostarted coming in different sizes depending on who is wearing them. The doctorial have decorated panels which are of different colors and is three feet long making it the longest of them all. Members of staff and special group of learned community also were instructed to wear their own graduation dresses that were lined up according to the level and degree and the color that the institution awarded them. The histories of using these robes have greatly influence our institutes and universities. The use of these rules globally meant that we maintain and accept this trend as standard that almost all universities follow, hence bringing them together to be united for a long time and will continue to be.
