 | | Family & Parenting | | | | A tight budget doesn't doom you to living in drab surroundings. A little creativity and a few do-it-yourself skills can turn your home into a showplace with very little cash investment. If you have a good eye for colour, space, light and quality, these tips will help you decorate your home like a professional interior designer. Build Around Quality Pieces Start your design with one or two pieces of high quality furniture. The right sofa, the perfect headboard or a stunning sideboard provide a starting point to build your room design around. One or two quality pieces set the standard for your decor and elevate the rest of your design. Shop Wisely Find discounted homewares at factory stores and warehouse stores online for the best prices. Keep your eye out for bargains at local shops, and stake out consignment shops and second-hand shops to find bargains on gently used furnishings and home accessories. Highlight Your Collections Be creative in displaying your collections. Arrange blue glass bottles on a set of lighted shelves. Hang your favourite mismatched dinner plates on the kitchen wall. Frame your crocheted snowflakes and use them as coasters. If you have three or more of something, it qualifies as a collection and can become an inexpensive, but very classy decorating accent. Define Your Visual Space When arranging furnishings in a room, balance visual weight. A full-length sofa is heavy visually. It takes up a lot of solid space. If you place it against one wall, balance it with objects that have similar visual weight, such as a pair of armchairs and a small end table, on the opposite wall. Use Colour to Draw Disparate Elements Together Scour flea markets and yard sales to find pieces you can refinish and fit into your design, but let your creative eye look beyond what's there. You can mix and match different styles of accents, chairs, tables and other furnishings, as long as you draw them together through colour or another common characteristic. Six mismatched kitchen chairs can coordinate beautifully, for example, if they share a unifying element. Take them home, strip them down and repaint them the same colour to create a unique, eclectic kitchen or dining room set. You don't have to have a big budget to decorate your home in style. You just need an imagination and a good eye for high quality pieces to create beautiful rooms that would be at home in any home and garden magazine.
