70’s and 80’s are remembered by many as the harbingers of various fashion styles and statements. The experiments carried out in designs impressed millions in those days. These years also saw a rapid change in the fashion world. It was due to the launch of MTV which brought a huge revolution in the field of fashion, music industry and whatsoever it relates to. Everyone was trying to redefine themselves during these years. The changes that both men and women brought upon themselves were almost instantaneous. In the decade of 70’s the dress code that people had was about wearing a tight upper with a loose lower. This got completely reversed in the decade of 80’s where women once wore bold dresses having shoulder pads and men used shirts in full sleeves that were stitched in expensive material along with loose fitting baggy trousers which were slightly tapered at the ankle joint. Now, this designer clothing gave a romantic outlook and gave birth to a romantic movement, which was inspired by punks from the former era. Leather and designer jeans captured the creativity of the people. Business women began to wearing pointed and high heeled shoes. Party shoes like jelly shoe flanked by their glossy colour were an instant hit.. Tracksuits and jog-pants turned leisure wear in this era. The music bands on this era also invented their own style statement of faded jeans that were acid washed and denim jackets and also tattoos & piercings were new highlights of their fashion trend. Men started to wear flashy earrings. Hairdo’s changed with shiny voluminous looks being in fashion. Colored and streaked hair came into fashion. Women appeared in short and men in long hair. Jewellery encrusted with precious stones became a display of wealth and power. Women wore long odd earrings which at times didn't match each other. They often even wore single earrings. Chains made from gold and silver, punk style and bright colors in jewellery came into fashion. Shape of the jewellery changed significantly. Digital watches with metal wristbands began popularising the starting of ‘80s but afterwards adults came back to dial watches. Teens still preferred the vibrant colours of plastic wrist watches. Watch faces had roman numerals. The status defining design was Movado at that time which featured a sleek watch with a dot at 12. Wearing two watches on the same arm became a style. Gold bracelets and hoop earrings became common in this time. Leather bags that were designer became trend setters. Being compact in size, clutch bags turned popular. Briefcases appeared on the scene in this period. Women tried to match shoe colors with their bags. Shawls in different designs and colors became a favorite of the women. These shawls could be put on with tops in the day and gowns in the evenings. Designer lingerie for women also made a part of the trend especially the ones with laces and coloured boxer shorts for men. Small metal framed eye glasses became common towards 1984-85. A smaller rounder type continued to be common through the entire decade. Fashion had heavy impact on everyday living of those decades.
