Wearing the same necklace everyday: Is it a good Idea?

Fashion & Cosmetics

Is wearing the same necklace every day a good idea for women, men or couples?

Well, that depends. Obviously, one must take physical hygiene into consideration along with the type of skin you have, one must also consider the material and type of necklace as well.

It should go without saying that one has to shower and clean their necklace. If you have skin that's particularly sensitive to metal, then you should avoid necklaces made from the following material: nickel, brass, or any other palladium alloys. It'll make your skin itchy, dry and you might end up with scabs or even worse, green skin.

Unless the necklace is made from 100 % sterling silver or at least 14 karat gold or higher, forget about it. If you can't afford either option, you could probably get away with a cheap metal necklace, however, avoid wearing it all day. You can test the metal of the necklace with a metal testing kit.

So for individuals who have sensitive skin, IS it a good idea to wear a necklace every day? If it's a metal necklace If the necklace is made from string or round beads or pearls, the answer is also a no. Unless you're a perfect sleeper who doesn't move at all, a women's necklace with large beads could press against your throat in your sleep. The only necklace that you could get away with wearing daily is a necklace made from silk, velvet, cord or a simple necklace with a pendant. Men's necklaces don't have ornate designs compared to women so they should be fine.

Moving on from skin conditions, wearing your necklace every day even to sleep isn't a good idea, it goes without saying that rolling around in your bed with your necklace on could result in damaging the necklace, it could possibly get tangled in the fabric of your pillow or sheets, and also create friction on your neck, once again, depending on its material. If you're a couple and you wear couple necklaces with your partner there's also the possibility of those necklaces getting tangled while sleeping. Also, the necklaces will become dirty from your sweat. If you don't have any metal allergies, you won't have to worry about the allergic reaction, but you'll still need to clean your necklace. If you absolutely must wear it everywhere even to bed, then make sure you clean it once every week.

You can clean your necklace with warm water, a gentle cleanser like dishwashing liquid or soap, and a drop of ammonia should suffice but if you want to get fancy you can use a metal cleanser. You can use a toothbrush to scrub it or rub it with your fingers after letting it soak in the warm water for an hour. Dry it with a towel or rag.

For necklaces that darkened in color or have become "tarnished", you can use a similar method with distilled white vinegar, salt, and flour or lemon juice and salt. Scrub the item with a toothbrush like before, rinse and dry the item.

For necklaces not made from metal, like cord or silk necklaces the method is the same. You can hang it out to dry or use a hairdryer or iron for silk or velvet necklaces.
