The sight strikes terror in a person's heart – especially if your unit is nearby. However, in our experience, 95% of the time sinkholes are manmade – not "natural". Let me explain. A natural sinkhole is caused by a void underground that suddenly opens. Most of us live overtop of limerock. Sometimes portions of that limerock dissolve which creates a void. Many of us live overtop of voids and will never know it because they don't open. A manmade sinkhole is caused by something installed underground that fails. Most of the time we find bad pipes that are causing the problems. If water is flowing out of the hole it is probably a pressure water line. If there is a dry conical shaped hole it is most likely a sewer – either storm or sewer. Florida soil is mostly sand and has no cohesion. It will flow right into any hole in a pipe causing that classic cone shape. The worst part of a natural sinkhole is the unknown. You never know how big it might be. At least the cost of repair of a manmade sinkhole can be quantified. Then you just fix it! Read Original Article: http://www.condominiumassociates.com/sinkholes/
