What is emotional eating? Our bodies and minds are connected. We need food to survive so it makes sense that our bodies and minds have a relationship with food. You know that feeling when you are down and you make a pathway directly to the fridge? Your mind is so bogged down by problems that you eat without thinking about it. Often times we eat comfort food or our favorite food hoping it will help us feel better or mask over the problems. This can be a downward spiral. You feel bad, so then you eat, then you feel bad about what you were eating, then you are mad at yourself, and the problem hasn’t gone away. Once you can understand emotional eating, you can start to see how to escape the downward slope and come out on top. Emotional eating is a trap. Learning to overcome it will allow you to climb out of the abyss and up into the sunshine again. I was frustrated with food controlling me, so I finally decided enough is enough. I gained back control with determination and found that as long as I kept going things got easier. I also was able to confidently improve other areas of my life with my newfound outlook. What is emotional eating? The cycle. Our bodies and minds are connected. When we feel bad, we look for ways to feel better. Eating our favorite foods helps to trigger a hormone in the brain that releases and helps us feel comforted. This rewards our body for making the choice to eat when we felt bad. This is how emotional eating becomes a cycle. Turning point. Planning meals in advance was a game changer for me. The meals were already planned so emotions didn’t get in the way. Gaining ground. Planning healthy meals helped me to lose weight, shop economically, and gain control of my eating habits. Coming out on top. Soon planning meals and eating right became a habit. I wasn’t a victim anymore. It is freeing to know that you are in control, not the food. We can’t control our emotions, but we can choose how we act on them.
