Permanent lines on your face can be discouraging. But, maybe, they might not be there permanently. There could be some things that you can do about them. The causes of wrinkles, age spots, crow’s feet and sagging skin include free radical damage, decreased production of collagen and low levels of hyaluronic acid. Chronic inflammation and the production of AGEs within the body play a role, as well. In reverse order, here’s what you can do about those things. AGEs are advanced glycation end-products. They form at the end of a chain reaction caused by eating too many simple carbohydrates. Simple carbs, including refined grains, white sugar and white potatoes, are digested too quickly. They cause a spike in blood sugar and insulin levels, which is bad enough, because those things contribute to chronic inflammation. But, to make matters worse, they cause protein molecules to harden. When the hardened protein molecules get inside of a cell, they cause the cell to die. The molecules are referred to as AGEs. Recent studies indicate that they are one of the causes of wrinkles or permanent lines. Chronic inflammation is primarily caused by having a bad diet and being overweight. Eating too many omega-6 fats and not enough of the omega-3s is one of the most common causes. The typical American diet is largely devoid of omega-3s. Skin inflammation can also be caused by the use of cosmetics and other skincare products that contain allergens, irritants and toxins. If a product causes redness, itching or a burning sensation, it is not a good thing. Feeling the burn might be good when you are working out, but not when you are caring for your skin. A low level of hyaluronic acid in the skin is one of the things that naturally accompany the aging process. Permanent lines can form as a result, because it is basically like a crack in the skin. Hyaluronic acid would prevent the crack from forming. Products containing it work temporarily, but the best solution is to use a product that prevents it from breaking down. One of the compounds known to do that are extracts found in a kind of seaweed called wakame kelp. Decreased production of collagen plays more of a role in lost firmness than in wrinkle formation. But, if the skin is not tight and firm, then wrinkles or permanent lines are more likely to form. A protein complex called functional keratin is one of the few cosmetic ingredients proven to stimulate collagen production. After only 18 days of use, it has been shown to improve the skin’s firmness by over 40%. The solutions to free radicals are antioxidants. You can eat more antioxidant-rich foods, but you should be sure to use a cream that contains lots of them. One of the most effective is coenzyme Q10. Coenzyme Q10 creams have been shown to reverse sun damage and reduce what could have been permanent lines by about 30%. There are some factors to consider when looking for coenzyme Q10 creams, but that’s a subject for another article.
