Many companies claim to provide an all natural skin care line. But when you start reading labels, you realize that only a few companies actually provide what they claim. If you do some more research, you learn that naturally occurring ingredients are not necessarily safe. The ones created synthetically in the laboratory are more likely to cause allergic reactions or irritation, but allergens, irritants and toxins exist in nature, too. Anyone that has ever had a run-in with poison ivy can vouch for that. If you do just a little more research, you will learn that important nutrients like vitamin E are now created synthetically using petrochemicals. Petrochemicals are basically waste products produced when crude oil is converted to gasoline. The molecules are used to create all kinds of consumables. They are even used in foods. I am not really trying to make it harder for you to find an all natural skin care line. My goal is to help you understand the importance of ignoring the advertising claims, reading the label of ingredients and doing your own research about allergens, irritants and toxins. Here’s an example of what you will learn. Essential oils have been used for thousands of years to convey the essence of plants and perfume the body. They are created by using flower petals and other parts. Water is added to the parts and they are placed in a distillation device. The finalized product is a concentrated plant fragrance. The fragrance has traditionally been added to basic vegetable oils. Olive oil is one historically used for this purpose. Depending on the amount of fragrance added to the oil, you may get a light pleasant scent or an overwhelming one. Practically every all natural skin care line includes these plant fragrances in their products. On the label of ingredients you may see citronella, limonene, Eugenol, gingerol, linalool, eucalyptus or rosewater. That is not a complete list of essential oils. It is just some of the ones commonly found in lotions, cleansers and other skincare products. The ingredients can cause allergic reactions. Many are mild toxins. Some are known to cause liver and kidney damage. Any can cause respiratory irritation. Fragrances have an effect on mood as well and can be damaging to the nerves in the body. If we only used one product a day containing essential oils and other fragrances, it probably wouldn’t cause any problem. But, since most of us use 3-9 products per day (according to researchers) we could be enveloped in competing fragrances throughout the day and that could cause problems. The best all natural skin care line contains beneficial plant extracts and oils, without the added plant fragrance. It’s just unnecessary to include and it could be bad for a person’s health. Use a little perfume to help you smell nice. But be sure your facial creams and lotions are free of added fragrances.
