Either silicone or saline solution breast implants are used for breast augmentation. Silicone has only been approved for use within the last ten years because it had previously been suspected of causing autoimmune disorders and cancer. However, several independent studies found no connection between the silicone solution and any associated health issues with a ruptured silicone implant. Although these implants are safe now, there are some restrictions in place to help protect patients. Unlike saline solution, which is absorbed by the body, silicone simply accumulates in the tissue if the implant ruptures. If the implants need to be removed, there may be some skin stretching and sagginess, especially for recipients of larger implants. Scarring and numbness can create issues later in life, especially for breastfeeding mothers. Additionally, some options are not available to all women in this age group because of some of the associated risks. Younger women seeking breast augmentation should understand that their bodies are still developing. Although the implants are approved for women as young as 18, this sometimes does not give the body time to naturally develop full breasts. Implants are a semi-permanent solution that will require frequent check-ups because there is a high risk of complication that can affect the patient later in life. Therefore, it is important for young women especially to understand the advantages and disadvantages associated with breast augmentation.
