This medication is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. It may also be used to prevent certain bacterial infections (e.g., rheumatic fever). This medication is known as a long-acting natural penicillin antibiotic. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.This antibiotic treats only bacterial infections. It will not work for viral infections (e.g., common cold, flu). Unnecessary use or misuse of any antibiotic can lead to its decreased effectiveness. What is Bicillin L-A? Bicillin L-A is an antibiotic in the class of drugs called penicillins. It fights bacteria in your body. Bicillin L-A is used to treat many different types of infections, such as tonsillitis, pneumonia, strep throat, bronchitis, and infections of the skin. Do not have Bicillin L-A if you have ever had an allergic reaction to Bicillin L-A, other penicillin antibiotics, or any of the ingredients listed at the end of this leaflet. Some of the symptoms of an allergic reaction may include skin rash; swelling of the mouth, throat or face; difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor or pharmacist as soon as possible if you do not feel well while you are receiving Bicillin L-A. Allergic side effects to Bicillin L-A include: skin rashes, hives, chills and fever, swelling, including swelling of the throat, joint pain... Other side effects include: blood disorders, damaged kidneys, damaged nerves, tissue damage at injection site, infection by other bacteria, diarrhoea, inflammation of the large bowel. This means that it is unlikely to harm an unborn baby. Do not, however, take Bicillin L-A without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant.
