Oseltamivir an antiviral drug, slows the spread of influenza (flu) virus between cells in the body by stopping the virus from chemically cutting ties with its host cell; median time to symptom alleviation is reduced by 0.5–1 day Oseltamivir is a prodrug, a (relatively) inactive chemical which is converted into its active form by metabolic process after it is taken into the body. It was the first orally active neuraminidase inhibitor commercially developed. This drug serving as a competitive inhibitor towards sialic acid, found on the surface proteins of normal host cells. By blocking the activity of the viral neuraminidase (NA) enzyme, oseltamivir prevents new viral particles from being released by infected cells. Tamiflu is approved to treat the flu in adults and children over age 12 months. It is also indicated as prophylaxis, or a preventative, including H1N1, against the flu for adults and children over age 12 months. Medicines and their possible side effects can affect individual people in different ways. The following are some of the side effects that are known to be associated with this medicine. Possible rare side effects thatdo not need to be reported to your doctor and should go away after a short period are: headache, vomiting, difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, diarrhea, nausea, dizziness, cough, stomach pain. Cases of anaphylaxis and serious skin reactions including toxic epidermal necrolysis, Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, and erythema multiforme have been reported in postmarketing experience with Tamiflu. Tamiflu should be stopped and appropriate treatment instituted if an allergic-like reaction occurs or is suspected. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends use of oseltamivir for treating flu in pregnant women. Efficacy of Tamiflu in patients who begin treatment after 48 hours of symptoms has not been established. Tamiflu is not a substitute for early influenza vaccination on an annual basis as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. The recommended oral dose of Tamiflu for treatment of influenza in adults and adolescents 13 years and older is 75 mg twice daily for 5 days. Treatment should begin within 2 days of onset of symptoms of influenza.
