The metabolic disorder of human body which occurs due to failure of insulin secretion by the pancreas is called diabetes. When carbohydrate is taken as food, it is broken down into glucose inside the body. Glucose which is the main source of energy is incorporated in the blood stream, in the presence of peptide hormone insulin. Insulin regulates the blood sugar level by moving the glucose from the blood stream to all the cells. When the pancreas produces no or less amount of insulin or the blood cells do not respond well to the insulin produced by the body starch or carbohydrate cannot be converted into a source of energy. In the absence of insulin the accumulation of glucose in the blood stream increases constantly results in diabetes. With the high glucose level in blood, several organs fail to function properly. A proper balance should be maintained within diet, physical labor and the medication. Slightest imbalance leads to low sugar level in the system and certain symptoms tike shivering of limbs, weakness and tiredness in noticed in the patient. In such a condition immediate intake of sugar becomes necessary. Certain health tips like keeping a check on the blood pressure and regular evaluation of cholesterol level is extremely important to diabetic patients. Patients should avoid smoking, drinking. They should lead a healthy life with proper medication, diet and physical activity. Such measures when taken help to maintain cholesterol level and blood pressure. Blood pressure should be checked at least once after very three months and cholesterol should be checked once a week. Diabetes care in India has gradually increased with the introduction of advanced medicines, technologically sound diabetes checking devices and insulin incorporation systems. Introduction of new drugs like incretins which helps insulin release by glucose stimulation are now available. These drugs do not lead to weight gain. The insulin pens that are available in the market today are highly efficient; they can be used easily and is portable in nature. Office goers and students suffering from diabetes find it convenient to use insulin pen, as amount of dose can be set previously and injecting insulin does not prove to be painful by these pens. Diabetes can cause serious vision problem like retinopathy, which leads to rapture of blood vessels in the retina. Present days improved treatments like - vitrectomy and laser photocoagulation have made it possible to return the natural vision to diabetes patients. Treatments of kidney ailments due diabetes too have improved a lot producing better results. Diabetes though seems to be a menace to the society; it can be controlled with proper measures.
