If you haven't been to a gynecologist, you may be feeling anxious or even scared. This is a normal reaction before any sort of new experience, especially one involving a medical practitioner. Read this, though, and you should feel a little more at ease before you head into your doctor's office. You'll first have a talk with the gynecologist. Your doctor will want to know a great deal of details about your personal life, but it will be very important that you answer every question truthfully. You'll be asked about the age you first had your period, if you've ever been pregnant, and if you are sexually active. Please don't take offense or be hesitant in providing a response, because the doctor is merely trying to get as much information as he or she can so that you can receive the correct treatment. The gynecologist will also want to know about your family history and any recent health issues you have suffered. If you feel that you need to be tested for a sexually transmitted disease, this is the time to say so. Next, you'll receive a thorough exam that may include having your neck checked for any potential thyroid problems. Your breasts and pelvic area will be examined, as will your vagina. The doctor will feel inside this area and may also use swabs to take specimens. If your doctor is a man, there will be a female nurse in the room so that you feel as comfortable as possible. The entire exam should take a maximum of 20-30 minutes. Again, it is very important that you don't withhold any sort of information from your doctor. If you feel your boyfriend or husband has been having sexual relations with another woman and then with you, it is critical that you say so. The purpose of all this, as stated earlier, is to help your doctor determine the right course of treatment. Finding the Right Gynecologist As important as it is to see a doctor, it is just as important to see the right one. You should do some research and find out of the doctor is board certified or affiliated with a hospital. This can be a great deal of help if you planning on having a child, because you'll want to have a level of familiarity with the facility where your doctor works. Find out who your friends and family members trust and find out why they feel that way. Talk to co-workers about a doctor who may be on your insurance plan and get their opinions. Most importantly, however, don't feel afraid or intimidated about seeing a gynecologist. Doing so is extremely critical to making sure that your health is where it should be.
