Benzalkonium chloride (Pharmatex) has a deleterious effect on the sperm membrane (spermicidal effect), which leads to their destruction and the impossibility of fertilization. Complete destruction of the sperm when released into medium with Pharmatex occurs after 20 seconds. On average, a single dose of the drug is designed to neutralize the sperm contained in a single ejaculate. Therefore, repeated sexual act requires the introduction of a new dose of a drug. In addition to spermicidal effect Pharmatex in laboratory tests showed antimicrobial activity against gonorrhea, chlamydia, trichomoniasis, herpes simplex of type II, as well as against Staphylococcus aureus. The drug is inactive against mycoplasma infection, as well as has low activity against pathogens of bacterial vaginosis, candidiasis, and syphilis. The studies confirming the same activity of benzalkonium chloride in the human body, show a somewhat lower antiseptic action. However, in combination with condom the risk of diseases, sexually transmitted diseases, is reduced. The drug doesn't change the normal microbial vaginsl flora, as well has no effect on woman's menstrual cycle. The use of Pharmatex during pregnancy didn't show adverse effects on fetal growth and development, as well as on the course of pregnancy. Pharmacokinetics: Pharmatex is not absorbed by the vaginal epithelium. It is absorbed only by vaginal walls and can be eliminated simply by washing them with water and normal physiological fluids. Indications for use: Pharmatex particularly is indicated for women who have a temporary or absolute contraindications to the use of more effective contraception methods (hormonal and intrauterine contraception). It is recommended to use Pharmatex to women after childbirth, breast-feeding mothers, after abortion, in the late reproductive period and before menopause, as well as in irregular sexual activity. Pharmatex can be used as an additional tool for other types of protection: • In combination with intrauterine contraceptive (IUD's); • In conjunction with a condom, diaphragm, cervical cap - to strengthen the contraceptive effect and reduce the possibility of sexual transmited diseases occurrence, other diseases of genital system; • In case of disorders in the regularity of oral hormonal contraceptives admission(omission or delay in receiving hormonal contraceptive tablets). Side effects: The drug is not absorbed into the blood and has no overall effects on women body, with the exception of allergic reactions in people with hypersensitivity to benzalkonium chloride. Possible side effects of the drug while it is used in recommended dosage, is minimal. Contraindications: First, contraindication to the use of topical contraceptives, including hypersensitivity to Pharmatex chemical components. The second important contraindication are diseases of the external genitalia, vagina, especially accompanied by trauma, fractures, inflammatory disease with the formation of erosions and ulcers. It is not recommended to use Pharmatex drug during local vaginal therapy with other drugs, since it is possible the destruction and disappearance of spermicidal activity of benzalkonium chloride.
