Sunscreens are one of the most common yet useful cosmetic products that help a great deal in protecting our skin from the harmful effects of sun’s UV rays. However, with a variety of sunscreen lotions available in the market these days, it is important for you as a consumer to make yourself aware of certain facts related to such cosmetic products, which in turn will help you make a much better choice. What is SPF? If you have ever purchased a sunscreen, you would have definitely come across a term called SPF marked in bold letters on the bottle. It basically stands for Sun Protection factor. You will find a wide range of SPFs in sun screen products. It could easily range anywhere between 2 to 50. SPF actually is an indicator of the lotion’s ability to block the harmful rays of the sun, which could lead to a variety of skin related problems and even cancer in certain cases. Therefore, it is extremely important that one wears such a protective lotion while being out in the sun for a considerable period of time. The higher the SPF, the better the protection will be. So, if you wear a sunscreen SPF 30+ moisturizer, you can afford to be in the sun 30 times longer than that you can without any sunscreen protection. SPF is also an indicator of the amount of ultraviolet radiation absorbed by the skin. So a lotion with SPF 2 has the ability to absorb 50% of the ultraviolet radiation. An SPF of 15 would absorb 93% and an SPF of 34 can absorb up to 97% of the sun’s UV radiations. How should you select a sunscreen? Most of the dermatologists and skin specialists suggest that one must never use a sunscreen which has an SPF less than 15. If you have a sensitive skin or got a fair complexion, then you must use a sunscreen with a higher SPF. The application of such sunscreens also plays an important role. Therefore, you need to ensure that sufficient amount of lotion is applied before you step out in the sun. A lot of people make the mistake of applying sunscreens just before stepping out. It should in fact be applied at least 30 minutes before going out in the sun, so that the skin can absorb the lotion in the mean time and its benefits can be maximized.
