The next time you get ready to sit back and enjoy an alcoholic beverage, take the time to ask yourself: “What effect will this have on my teeth?” The simple fact is that some alcoholic drinks are worse for your smile than others, and it’s important to be aware of the impact they can have on your oral health. Below is a brief overview of what alcohol can do to your teeth as well as a list of drinks that you should be particularly careful around – as well as those that are better for your grin. Alcohol and Your Oral Health Alcohol has a tendency to dry out your mouth, leaving less saliva to wash away harmful bacteria. Over time, dry mouth can lead to cavities as well as severe gum disease. If you already suffer from dry mouth, drinking alcohol of any kind can easily make the problem worse. Furthermore, many alcoholic beverages contain sugar, sweeteners, and syrups. All of these ingredients can increase your risk of tooth decay, especially when combined with lower saliva levels. Even worse, sugary liquids can easily flow between your teeth, encouraging plaque buildup in difficult-to-clean areas. Finally, it’s worth noting that many alcoholic beverages (especially dark-colored ones) can stain your smile. Brushing alone isn’t enough to prevent this since the stain particles can slip into the tiny holes in your enamel. As a result, it’s not uncommon for people who drink a lot of alcohol to end up with discolored teeth. The Worst Alcoholic Drinks for Your Mouth The following alcoholic beverages can have a particularly devastating impact on your smile if you don’t enjoy them in moderation: • Rum and Coke: This easy-to-make drink unfortunately contains a high level of sugar. It is also very acidic and can significantly wear down your teeth over time. • Vodka Red Bull: Energy drinks are a leading cause of tooth decay in adults, and mixing them with alcohol only makes the issue worse. • Vodka Cranberry: Fruit juices might sound healthy, but they tend to be high in sugar. Cranberry juice in particular has higher sugar content than several kinds of soda. As such, cranberry juice with alcohol that dries out your mouth tends to be a bad combination. • Bloody Mary: The tomato juice used to make a Bloody Mary can easily lead to tooth erosion and cavities. It’s also very likely to stain your teeth if you’re not careful. The Best Alcoholic Drinks for Your Mouth While the following beverages aren’t necessarily “good” for your oral health, they tend to be safer for your teeth than other options: • Light Beer: Compared to other alcoholic beverages, light beer isn’t as acidic, and it doesn’t stain your teeth as easily. • Gin & Tonic: Being a clear beverage, gin and tonic is less likely to cause dental discoloration. There’s also less acid in this type of drink, so it won’t wear down your enamel as much. If you’re concerned about how your favorite alcoholic beverage might be affecting your smile, talk to your dentist to see what they suggest.
