Is Green Tea Caffeine Good For You?

Health
The green tea caffeine content varies 12-50mg, depending on where the plant was grown, the brand, the brew time and whether the leaves are used for a second steep.  The second steep would contain only about 12mg.  Of the brands on the market, Sobe probably contains the least, at 14mg per eight ounce cup.

Decaffeinated teas are not caffeine-free.  They do contain less of the stimulant, but the processes that manufactures use to decaffeinate the leaves are of questionable safety.  Solvents are generally used and one of the commonly used solvents is a probable carcinogen.

Besides, the green tea caffeine may actually be good for your health.  It actually contains “caffeine-like” substances.  Theophylline is one of the caffeine-like substances.  It was first extracted from the camellia sinensis (the tea plant) leaves in 1888.  It has anti-inflammatory activity, relaxes smooth muscles, increases heart muscle activity and blood flow.  It stimulates the central nervous system, which is what “wakes you up”.

Theobromine is the other caffeine-like substance in camellia sinensis leaves.  It was discovered in 1841.  By 1916, it was being used to reduce swelling.  Over the years, it has been used to relive angina, arteriosclerosis, varicose veins and other vascular conditions.  Currently it is used as a vasodilator.  It increases the width of your blood vessels.

One of the risks of excessive caffeine intake is increased blood pressure.  Theophylline increases blood pressure, but theobromine reduces it.  So, the combination of the caffeine-like substances in camellia sinensis may cancel each out.  This combined with the presence of l-theanine (an amino acid) could explain why some studies have shown that drinking green can help with anxiety, whereas other caffeinated beverages increase feelings of anxiety.

One thing is certain, the green tea caffeine is better for you than what you would find in coffee.  It contains less of the stimulant than coffee does and there are other health benefits associated with drinking it.

It is often included in multi-ingredient nutritional supplements, because it is believed to reduce the risk of various kinds of cancer and heart disease.  The antioxidants in camellia sinensis plants provide the anti-cancer benefits.  They are called catechins.

Catechins constitute about 25% of the dry weight of fresh tea leaves, but extracts with an 80% concentration are available in health supplements.  Much research has been conducted concerning the health benefits of catechins and more is underway.

If you are concerned about the green tea caffeine content, you might want to consider a supplement.  Although the extracts increase the concentration of catechins, they reduce the content of caffeine.  Per 100 mg of extract, you would only get 1-4mg of caffeine.

The best supplements contain your basic vitamins and minerals, as well as amino acids and herbal extracts.  If we all try to improve our nutritional intake, we may live longer, healthier lives.

Studies have shown that nutritional deficiencies are on the rise, even though many people are overweight.  The green tea caffeine won’t help prevent nutritional deficiencies.  That’s why it’s a good idea to look for a multi-nutritional supplement that includes the extract.
