Taking Turmeric For Diabetes May Be Beneficial, But It Will Be Years Before Human Trials Are Conclu

Health
Researchers have looked at the beneficial effects of turmeric for diabetes and many other health problems.  In traditional Indian medicine, it was used to promote wound healing, treat arthritis, relieve pain, treat stomach ailments, kill worms and relieve allergies.  Another plant, bitter melon, was preferred for treating diabetics.  Modern research indicates that bitter melon does, in fact, reduce blood sugar level, but turmeric has a different effect.

The active compounds in turmeric are known as curcuminoids, primarily curcumin.  Curcumin has anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant.  It stimulates the secretion of bile, which is one of the reasons it is beneficial for digestive disorders.

Researchers believe that curcumin may reduce the risk of heart disease, Alzheimer’s and cancer.  To diabetics, the reduced risk of heart disease and Alzheimer’s is appealing, because they have an increased risk of both of those diseases.  But, they would also be interested in the results of some of the latest studies.

Researchers looking at the benefits of turmeric for diabetes have used diabetic mice for these preliminary studies.  What they have seen is that curcumin inhibits the production of glucose by the liver.  In another study, they found that curcumin significantly increases insulin production and cellular uptake of insulin.  In other words, it addresses the root causes of type II diabetes.  Whether or not there would be any benefit for type I is unclear.  There will be no definitive evidence until clinical trials are conducted.

It will be years, before human trials are conducted or concluded.  Right now, the best that anyone can say is that taking turmeric for diabetes may help.  Diabetics should monitor their blood glucose levels carefully and make no changes in medication, without a doctor’s advice or approval.

Many healthcare professionals think of type II diabetes as a nutritional disease.  Inadequate nutritional intake over the course of many years is one of the likely causes.  The foods that many people prefer to eat are simple carbohydrates; white bread, sugar and potatoes.  These foods are digested too quickly and cause increased production of glucose by the liver.

In the bloodstream, glucose can bind with protein molecules, which would prevent either molecule from being used by the cells of the body.  As these unusable molecules float through the bloodstream, they bind with other protein molecules and eventually become “grotesque”.  Those grotesque molecules (which researchers call AGEs) are implicated in a variety of illnesses, including type II diabetes and the complications that arise from it.

Taking turmeric for diabetes may be beneficial, but the only nutrient that is known to break up and prevent the formation of AGEs is l-carnosine.  The supplement of choice would include l-carnosine, turmeric and piperine, because piperine increases their absorption into the bloodstream.

The best health supplements contain a variety of nutrients that are beneficial for diabetics, as well as everyone else.  Before you consider taking turmeric for diabetes, you might want to learn a little more about the better multi-nutritional supplements.  It could greatly improve your life.
