Most of the people in our western world who are concerned for their good health know about the importance of omega 3 fatty acids. However some want to know, how much omega 3 fatty acids to take on a daily basis? Well, luckily the US National Institute of Health has just put out paper on this quite recently. Before I tell you the results of this paper, I would like to point out that the amount of Omega 3 fish oil that we should take daily varies. It depends on how old you are, it depends on how good your health is. Now the recommended daily intake of fatty acids: they recommend a daily intake of 650mg of the fatty acids DHA and EPA. They recommend 2.2grams of ALA per day. And we should limit our saturated fats to about 8% of our total calorie intake per day. Now if you are a healthy thirty five year old, then I would recommend 2,000 mg to 4,000 mg per day. If you are elderly then you would need a higher amount to improve your memory, and your recall function. Also you need to take more Omega 3s to improve your cardiovascular health. If you are younger then you need to take more because your brain is using more Omega 3 fatty acids while it is developing. The bran is comprised of some sixty per cent fat and twenty grams of that is DHA which keeps us mentally fit. If this DHA gets low then we suffer mood swings and bouts of depression. There are three types of fatty acids, ALA, DHA and EPA. The type ALA is the type found in flaxseed and leafy greens such as purslane, this plus nuts is the Omega 3 fatty acids recommended by vegetarians. This type needs to be converted by our body over to DHA, and this does not always happen efficiently. Now how much Omega 3 fatty acids to take on a regular basis. The other two types are DHA and EPA. These are the types found in fish and these do not need to be converted, we use them directly. We recommend that you take these two fatty acids in an Omega 3 fish oil supplement. However you need to make sure that the oil you take has been purified to remove the impurities. These impurities are lead, mercury and the toxins like PCBs etc. Once these impurities have been removed you will have the purest oil you can buy.
